Squadron News

7/13/2008 - Congratulations to our Commander!  Chris Bagdikian has been promoted to Captain.

7/7/2008 - SM Michael Sullivan is now officially the squadron Safety Officer. Lt. Pat Bergin becomes the Finance Officer and an assistant safety officer. He replaces Lt. Pam Romance, who has moved out of state, in that position. Congratulations to them on their new positions.

6/25/2008 - Pacific Region has a major revision to it Web site, www.pcr.cap.gov, that members may want to take a look at

6/21/2008 - Congratulations to Kent Greer on his promotion to 1LT. His specialty track is Flight Operations Officer, which tracks closely with his duty position as Aircraft Manager. Congratulations Kent.

4/29/2008 - Another Promotion! Congratulations to SM Martin Skiby for his promotion to 2Lt.

4/21/2008 - Our cadets led off the action at the Warbirds in Action air show at Minter Field, Shafter. Most Junior ROTC programs were represented at the opening ceremonies, carrying their respective service flags. But Squadron 121’s cadets made up the color guard, marching along the flight line. Cadets and many seniors also helped all day with flight line duties, moving aircraft, trash details, recruiting for the squadron and innumerable other tasks.  Members of the public stopped us and thanked us for all of our efforts and a number of people specifically mentioned and appreciated the color guard. Seniors involved were Lt. Col. Alan Ferguson, Lt. Col. Dave Mish, Capt. Larry Turoski, Lts. Pam Romance, Ricardo Ybarra, Mike Lynch, Samantha Lack and Chris
Bagdikian
and Senior Member Miguel Dominguez.

Cadets included C/CMSgt. Nathan Schuler, C/SMSgt. Jessica Waldrop, C/TSgt. Cyrus Romance, C/SSgt. Grayson Stewart, C/SRA. Brad Frizell, C/A1C. Daniel Frizell, C/AB. Jason Skiby, C/Amn. Justin Moore, C/Amn. Estephanie Ybarra, C/Amn. Priscilla Ybarra, C/AB. Edgar Romero and C/AB. Richard DeLeon.

4/13/2008 - Congratulations to pilot James Foster, who was promoted from Senior Member to 2LT.

Congratulations to Maj. Rudy Arambula who has completed the entire FAA Pilot Proficiency Program (a.k.a. “Wings” program). For non-pilots, that’s a biggie. CAP is a strong proponent of the Wings program and we urge all pilots to attend as many Wings programs as possible.

Kudos to immediate past Squadron 121 commander Capt. Greg Williams, who won his Level III ribbon and Grover Loening award at last week’s meeting. That is truly a great achievement.

4/12/2008 -  Many activities involving Squadron 121 are arriving along with spring.  The Squadron will nee need as many of you as possible to pitch in. Here is a preliminary calendar:

Saturday, April 19 – Warbirds in Action air show at Minter Field, Shafter. Our cadets will be there as part of the color guard, helping with flight line monitoring and staffing a recruiting booth. Seniors are needed as well. If you want to help, coordinate with Lt. Mike Lynch. Forms 17 for seniors and 31 for cadets required for those volunteering to work.

Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27 – We will be hosting a Wing-wide weekend conference of inspectors general. This may involve some of the top officials of California Wing.

Saturday and Sunday, May 10 and 11 – We will be hosting a Wing-wide gathering of corporate aircraft for CAWG’s annual fleet-wide aircraft inspection. Top officials from California Wing, aircrews from around the state and possibly some Air Force liaison officials will be present. Sunday’s activities may include extensive emergency mission training. More on this aspect of the weekend will be forthcoming shortly.

Tuesday, May 13 – Air Force officers from Vandenberg Air Force Base will be at our meeting for a partial program review. This will be the first of three anticipated Air Force or California Wing inspections this year. Members who have blues should wear them on those dates. Alternate CAP uniform or polos are acceptable if no other uniform is available. Seniors should avoid wearing BDUs and flight suits.

Some time in June – Date yet to be determined -- we will have a top-to-bottom review of our squadron programs made by Air Force Staff Assistance Visitors. It is vital that all staff personnel have their Subordinate Unit Inspection documents completed within the next week or so for processing in preparation for this inspection. Members who have blues should wear them on that date. Alternate CAP uniform or polos are acceptable if no other uniform is available. Seniors should avoid wearing BDUs and flight suits.

4/6/2008 - IT’S A GREAT LINE, BUT – It was a dark and only slightly stormy night and long into the wee hours of the morning last week when ground teams from our squadron (Mizner, Bergin and Bagdikian), Naval Air Station Lemoore and a CAP flight from Fresno after hours of effort finally tracked down a carrier-only signal on 243 mHz -- would you believe at the K-mart in Delano. A very confused manager with a limited knowledge of CAP called the police and finally let the team into the store after it closed. A Delano PD officer who met us after we were done said he told the manager, “Lady, why would anybody claim to be a Civil Air Patrol member if they weren’t?” Hmmm … don’t know whether it is a compliment or a slam, but it is a great line.

4/2/2008 - CI-13 STUDY GROUP – Now AFIADL-13, this is a very complex course required for promotion in Level II and above. It is one of the most comprehensive courses available from Air University. We are fortunate that Capts. Greg and Shanna Williams have developed a study group format that has helped many members pass this course. They are willing to sponsor another round if there is an adequate expression of interest.

3/18/2008 - Membership came through this week for Miguel Dominguez and Mike Sullivan. It’s great to have them aboard. This will be a busy year for Group 6 and California Wing (and next year is the graded training exercise by the Air Force). The more members we have sharing the load and working on their ES and staff duties the more effective we will be. Thanks for joining, Miguel and Mike.

3/16/2008 - Squadron 121 was well represented in the statewide guided training exercise observed by the Air Force this weekend. On Saturday, Lt. Bill Ambrosecchia worked with Lt. Ed Vonderbeck of Squadron 471 (Naval Air Station Lemoore) to provide statewide radio relay services from our base. On Saturday, our aircraft was tasked in Eastern Kern County with Capt. Rob Custer and Lt. Sue Lewis aboard. On Sunday, they flew with Lt. Pat Bergin over toward Paso Robles on a second tasking. Also headed over to the coast on Sunday was a pair of ground teams working together – Lt. Cols. Gail Mizner and Alan Ferguson were joined by Lts. Chris Bagdikian and Michael Lynch tasked with locating an ELT. The daylong effort paid off as the ELT was located west of Highway 101 and north of Paso Robles at mid-afternoon. Thanks to one and all who sacrificed all or part of the weekend.

3/9/2008 - Many thanks to Capt. Rob Custer and pilots Lt. Pat Bergin, Lt. Ken Greer and Capt. Scott Garrison for bringing together Cadet Orientation Rides last weekend. Taking to the air were C/Amn Priscilla and Estaphanie Ybarra (first flights for both), C/SMS Jessica Waldrop (fourth flight), C/SSGT Cyrus Romance (third flight) and C/Amn Connor Blue (first flight). These O-rides not only are great for the cadets, but they show the Air Force and California Wing our commitment to our congressional mandate to foster aerospace education. It also demonstrates effective use of our corporate aircraft and gives pilots always valuable flight time. The pilots and cadets get a lot of recognition from these flights, of course, but a well-deserved salute also goes to the seniors who work tirelessly in the cadet program, specifically in this case Cadet Programs Officer Lt. Pam Romance. Great job, one and all.

2/27/2008 - Three of our cadets earned their Basic Communication User Training at the CPC held last week at Camp San Luis Obispo. Recommended to receive Radio Operator Authorization cards are Senior Airman Stewart Grayson, Staff Sergeant Cyrus Romance and Airman Basic Jason Skibby. Once issued, the ROAs will enable these cadets to work comm, an especially valuable resource to support missions. Great work by all three!
